A Louis XV Style Gilt-Bronze Mounted Lacquer Commode attributed to Henry Dasson
This Louis XV Style Gilt-Bronze Mounted Lacquer Commode contains a beautiful lake scene painted in chinoiserie style depicting people in a Chinese garden surrounded by a lake, small islands, a trio of cranes and lush nature. The scene is dotted with women and fisherman who are in boats or standing on the garden pavilion that is centered on the belly of the commode. Bronze ornamentation reminiscent of foliage and natural forms accent the corners and frame the central scene on the front of the commode.
Henry Dasson (1825–1896) was one of the leading French cabinetmakers of the 19th century continuing in the tradition of the great 18th-century Parisian ébénistes producing case furniture veneered in tropical woods or lacquer of the highest quality mounted in gilt bronze.
