Fine Quality Italian Carrara Marble Statue of a Young Beauty
Giuseppe Gambogi (Italian, 1862-1938)
Fine quality Italian carrara marble statue of a young beauty holding a rose. Signed ‘G. GAMBOGI, FIRENZE’
Giuseppe Gambogi was born in the northern city of Pisa in the mid 19th century, later traveling to Florence to train in the arts and begin his artistic career. Working mainly in Impressionist & Modern sculpture styles, his sculptures were aimed to appeal to clientele outside of Italy, as his style was mainly informed by French artistic movements of the era. Working in multiple mediums of stone, this statue is rendered in carrara marble. His work is held at the museum of Dantesco in Ravenna, and has garnered up to $100,000 at auction, a price which was achieved fairly recently at Christie's New York in 2017.
The image of the beauty with a rose is prolific in impressionist art, and this statue rendering is exceptional, as it depicts the young lady in a dress inspired by orientalist art; particularly in the ornate belt she wears at the waist and the strapless neckline. Her delicate fingertips graze the soft flower as she gazes down in admiration. Her feet, seemingly in motion, are posed as if she is about to step forward and ask you to share in the rose's beauty. A gorgeous statue overall.
