An ovoid gilt bronze urn adorned with cast swagged garlands, bows and acanthus leaves housing a white enamel clock face with Roman hours and Arabic minutes and marked ‘De La Fontaine Paris. The urn is flanked by two muses, a female figure representing Astronomy holds a celestial globe and sits across from Geography, who holds a rolled-up map.
The catalogue European Clocks in the J. Paul Getty Museum contains a drawing of this clock model with the signature "Martincourt " for the master bronzier Etienne Martincourt (1735-1791). Suggesting this piece was first designed by him in the 18th century.
