Sèvres Antique Porcelain
Napoleon III Style Gilt-Bronze Center Table with rosso levanto marble top with baluster support with three scroll form legs atop a tripartite base.
Otherwise known as the second empire style, the Napoleon III style is characterized by exuberant shapes, profuse ornamental and decorative motifs, and rather naturalist human figures. An amalgamation of many styles present before the reign on Napoleon III, during his twenty year reign, styles that had already passed came back into fashion in frenzy. A resurgence of Renaissance, Louis XV, Louis XVI, and Gothic styles appeared, as well as Chinese and Japanese art, which had already gained popularity during the Charles X and Regency periods. All of these styles were represented in the decorative arts nearly simultaneously. This birthed a stylistic a combination of abundance, proliferation, and eclecticism that was sometimes excessive but gives the impression of meticulousness and opulence.
