Cupid, the God of Love, typically depicted as a mischievous winged boy who slings arrows which cause the wounded to fall hopelessly in love with the first person they see is represented here, fixated upon a butterfly which has landed upon him. The Greek word for butterfly is Psyche, also meaning soul. Often depicted as two adults side by side, this beautiful oil depiction of Cupid and Psyche symbolizes the complete union of spiritual and physical love.
