La Concertina, The Little Concert, is an endearing genre scene painted by the exceptional oil painter Eugenio Zampighi. Genre scenes depict everyday life and the common people. In this scene, Zampighi has chosen to focus on a pair of Italian peasant figures, and elderly man and a young woman, as he plays a song on his accordion for her in a modest kitchen and dining space with cobblestone floors and a large cooking fireplace in the background. The pair both wear modest clothes and large smiles across their faces, imbuing the scene with cheer. It was typical for Italian farmers to share interior spaces with their animals from time to time and Zampighi has included this, painting a set of three chicks and a rooster peck away at feed in the foreground of the composition.
